Research
The NCBES has over 70 academic investigators, drawn from the Colleges of Science, Engineering and Medicine and Health Sciences as well as over 300 research staff and students. The NCBES has targeted key research domains on the basis of scientific merit, critical mass, the opportunity for international recognition, regional/national impact and contribution to society. Centre researchers are engaged in interdisciplinary programmes focused on innovative therapeutic solutions to current medical challenges including cardiovascular disease, cancer, orthopaedics, reproductive medicine, and neurodegenerative diseases. The NCBES provides an environment where expertise in molecular and cell biology, imaging technology, clinical sciences and engineering sciences merge. The Centre also has a strong translational and clinical research programme with the objective of translating our research discoveries into improved patient care.
Education and Training
The NCBES is committed to the education and training of the current and future generation of research scientists. In addition to training through postgraduate research, the NCBES offers two taught MSc programmes in Biomedical Science, a full-time one year course and a part time distance-learning programme, which takes place over two years.
Clinical and Translational
The Centre also has a strong translational and clinical research programme with the objective of translating our research discoveries into improved patient care including in cardiovascular disease, cancer, orthopaedics, reproductive medicine, and neurodegenerative diseases. New facilities for translational and clinical research collocated on campus will further strengthen these programmes.
Industry Partnership
Collaboration with Medical, Healthcare and Biotechnology companies is an important aspect of the NCBES research strategy. The NCBES has a large number of industry partnerships including an SFI funded CSET, REMEDI, and SRCs in Functional Biomaterials and Glycosciences. Partnerships have been developed with multinational and indigenous companies including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Beckman Coulter, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Proxy Biomedical, LabCoat, and Agilent.
