The International Energy Research Centre (hosted at Tyndall National Institute) invites applications for the position of IERC Researcher/Snr Researcher – Software/Systems Engineer. The IERC is a translational research centre focused on delivering demand side energy efficiency through the development of integrated, systems level solutions. IERC research projects bring together value chains of Industry Partners (Energy Service Companies, Technology Integrators, Facilities Management Companies, ICT and Telecoms Companies etc), with leading Research Institutions to deliver innovative and commercially relevant solutions to Energy Sector. The Centre is currently developing new activity under the strategic thematic areas of Smart and Sustainable Communities, Low Carbon Heating and Cooling, Energy Monitoring Management and Analysis and Embedded and Micro Generation Systems.
The IERC core research team includes researchers and senior researchers, who report to the Head of Research and conduct specified pieces of research, as directed by the IERC Steering Committee.
The role of researcher/senior researcher is mainly, but not exclusively, to carry out Innovation Needs Assessments (INAs) and strategic research planning activities in order to define research objectives and research output specifications. They will act as translators of both industry needs and academic research capabilities in order to bring about highly structured and well defined research projects.
IERC Researchers will be expected to participate in the definition and execution of fully collaborative projects, particularly where special expertise can make a direct contribution and generally for quality control purposes. IERC Researchers will be expected to have both academic and industry experience, together with a sound understanding of the wider energy landscape beyond their area of expertise. All researchers will be expected to initiate and contribute to writing of proposals for EU and other external funding streams.
This job advertisement is for a fixed-term, full-time position and is subject to funding approval.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (RESEARCHER)
• For system and software requirements analysis, systems and software design and software development of a tool suite for energy auditing and measurement and verification.
• For software testing criteria definition and execution both in lab and in field.
• To deliver high-quality, well-tested and documented software baseline releases on time and within schedule.
• To organize and conduct workshops and meetings with industry partners to ensure proper communication of user needs and expectations.
• To conduct specified programmes of research as required by the IERC Board and Technical Management committee.
• To work with industry partners to develop calls for proposals for INAs and collaborative research projects.
• To contribute to grant proposal writing including technical, management and financial volumes for EU and other funding streams.
• To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by the project leader.
• To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the research group.
• To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day to day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor.
• To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research.
• To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
KEY CRITERIA (RESEARCHER)
• A PhD qualification, or relevant research experience and proven track record.
• Full software lifecycle experience including demonstration and delivery required
• A working knowledge of object-oriented design and development including user interfaces required; expert knowledge in these areas highly regarded
• Experience in using Configuration Management tools (such as GIT, SVN, CVS, etc.) required; experience in setup and management of CM tools highly regarded
• Web based development including PHP, HTML 5.0, JavaScript and CSS required; experience in other languages (C++, Java) highly regarded
• Experience with Database access languages (such as SQL) required; experience in DB design and development including table normalization highly regarded
• User Interface design and development experience using available tools (such as Moqups, OpenInterface, etc.) required; object-oriented user interface development highly regarded
• Highly self-motivated and able to demonstrate initiative.
• Capable of working within a project team to achieve results.
• Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
• A commitment to personal development.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (SENIOR RESEARCHER)
• To lead research projects conducted by IERC core research teams, including but not limited to INA-based, industry collaborative and externally funded (e.g. EU) projects.
• To work with the industry project managers to coordinate technical research activities on large collaborative IERC projects.
• To generate research initiatives and ideas.
• To define research outputs and objects and test assumptions around research methodologies and project plans.
ADDITIONAL CRITERIA (SENIOR RESEARCHER)
• At least five years research experience beyond the PhD qualification.
• Evidence of leading team-based research projects to successful completion.
• Experience of working collaboratively with industry.
• Proven track record of successful EU grant writing experience (including coordinator responsibilities).
