The Tyndall National Institute invites applications for a PhD position.

The Tyndall National Institute is a world leader in the development of wearable sensor systems for use in the body, on the body and around the body. Working closely with a global range of academic, business and clinical partners, our technology is under evaluation by several multinational corporations and is approaching market readiness in a number of areas. In parallel, Tyndall has an ambitious ‘ICT for Health’ strategy that will leverage our core strengths in Information and Communications Technologies to develop the next generation of breakthrough sensing systems for wearable smart systems. There is a growing demand for wearable smart systems for healthcare applications, which are enabled through a variety of embodiments of smart systems. These sensing systems can be on the body or around the body, and need to be miniaturised (i.e. non-intrusive), self-powered, and low cost, for monitoring vital health signals and capturing critical data for enabling appropriate interventions. This could include capture of electrical (e.g. EEG, ECG and EMG), position and localization (e.g. accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers), and biosensors (e.g. pulse oximetry, biochemical analysis of specified biomarkers such as glucose and lactate). These devices need to locally process the captured data and communicate within the body sensor network, via a local data aggregator such as a mobile device, to the cloud. Tyndall National Institute - University College Cork, invites applications for a PhD student to develop wearable sensing technology for clinical applications. The project will involve collaboration with multi-disciplinary researchers across the full value chain of wearable systems, including microsystems technology, wireless sensors, electronics and low power system design, biochemical and electrophysiological sensing, and data analytics. The position provides the opportunity to develop innovative solutions for continuous monitoring of clinical parameters in a wearable smart system, as well as gaining valuable experience in design, fabrication and testing of wearable devices and systems. The successful candidate will get the experience of presentation to international conferences and workshops, industry meetings, and publication of the research in high impact journals.


· The position will involve regular reporting to the Tyndall PI and collaborators, and contributing to project reports and presentations.

· The structured Science and Engineering PhD will involve taking a number of courses to complement the practical training aspects.


· Science or Engineering Degree in a relevant discipline with first, or higher second class honours

· Excellent communication skills.

· Good written and oral English.


· MSc in related field

· Graduate or post-graduate work or project experience related to wearable devices or systems

· One or more publications on related research
