Microelectronic Circuits Centre Ireland (MCCI) is an EI / IDA technology centre hosted at Tyndall National Institute in collaboration with the University of Limerick. Its mission is to carry out industry-led world-class mixed-signal and RF integrated circuit research to deliver trained people and IP to industry. MCCI is already collaborating with 31 companies and many of our staff eventually transfer into the thriving microelectronics industry in Ireland. MCCI targets real-life applications with its research and currently has projects in diverse topics such as DNA detection for food safety, next generation optical communications, bio-sensing, imaging for security applications and early cancer detection.

MCCI is carrying out innovative research in the areas of high performance data-converters, power management, mmWave Radio Frequency, Frequency Synthesis and high speed optical transceiver integrated circuits to enable new applications. With a focus on advanced geometry process nodes, Digitally-Assisted-Analogue techniques such as digital pre-distortion, post-correction and calibration can be used in such deep-submicron technologies to improve the performance of traditional Analogue circuits and these techniques are at the core of MCCI research.

The MCCI Centre at the Tyndall National Institute, University College, Cork, invites applications for a CAD Engineer.

Reporting to the MCCI Operations Manager, the CAD Layout Engineer will be responsible for developing MCCI’s CAD and layout methodologies. This includes developing scripts to increase the efficiency of CAD usage by local and remote design teams. It includes installation and configuration of PDKs, managing tool versions, and project CAD setups. It also includes executing and assisting the layout activity in the center, including methodology, planning, area estimation, floorplanning, and verifying analog mixed signal layout.


· Establish and manage appropriate CAD setups for all chip design projects

· Download, configure and manage deployment of multiple Process Design Kits (PDK)

· Setup and manage version management system for all chip design projects

· Establish and refine queuing system for efficient use of CAD licenses

· Review & establish best practices for data management encompassing project library quantities & purposes, cell naming conventions, project directory structures, tapeout archivals, project archivals, etc.

· Act as primary interface between designers and PDK, CAD & IP vendor support teams

· Manage access to PDKs, projects, CAD licenses and vendor IP

· Develop automation to improve designer efficiency

· Execute and support the layout engineering activities across a range of research projects targeting a variety of mainly CMOS process nodes (spanning 0.35um to 28nm) and potentially other CMOS bulk, FinFet and FDSOI, SiGe BiCMOS and other technologies

· Work closely with circuit design researchers in floorplan, power/ground arrangement, critical nets, matched devices, block interface, top level integration and schedule assessment.

· Contribute to methodology initiatives to accelerate design layout.

· Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.


· Bachelors in Electronics Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline

· Minimum of 2 years’ experience in either a IC CAD engineering role or an IC Design/Layout engineering role that encompassed extensive understanding of CAD & PDK setup issues

· Familiar with Cadence and Mentor Calibre

· Experience with Cadence Skill, Python, Perl

· Experience with Cliosoft or similar such version management tools

· Experience with analog mixed-signal circuit design at or below 90nm

· Experience with silicon validation


· Familiar with UNIX / LINUX working environment essential

· Strong automation skills

· Experience using IC CAD tools & Process Design Kits

· Good planning, organisational and communication skills essential

· Strong evidence of being a self-starter essential

· Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment essential
