Business Development Manager Career Profile

Business Unit Manager

This position usually concerns managing a business unit. The BUM is responsible for the ultimate P + L (profit and loss) of the business unit. Expertise is therefore required in the specific sector - e.g. Pharmaceutical, Life Science or a particular sub-area of these e.g. Analytical Instrumentation.

The purpose of this role is to maintain and develop our sales markets through the efficiencies of professional people who we can lead, develop and communicate with. This role should build and strengthen relationships with our customer and supplier base. The role should also maintain and develop relationships with all business unit managers and service personnel.

Responsibilities
  • Manage sales targets and gross margins as agreed
  • Promotion of instrumentation and software
  • Develop and lead team of people to successful performance of business unit through timekeeping, cover for leave, maintaining company policies and communication with staff members
  • Manage supplier and customer relationships
  • Collaborate with internal groups, Marketing, Service and Stores and Finance for successful management of business unit
  • Provide regular feedback to management on business unit successes and failures
Requirements
  • Be a flexible team player, be able to work independently, prioritise own work and, maintain confidentiality of information
  • Have a positive attitude and be pro-active, have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work under pressure and within short time constraints
  • Sales experience, although not essential, would be preferable
  • Preferably a degree in Chemistry, or equivalent
